THE FIRST BIG LOUIE
Long ago, in the world of camp legends, there was Big Louie—a massive, mysterious Adirondack lake trout known for snapping fishing lines and straightening hooks. Big Louie was clever, elusive, and never easy to catch.
When Creative Themes first opened in 1983, the camp pond was filled with large carp and even bigger possibilities. During one unforgettable August camp week—with just 17 campers—a boy named Joey caught the very first “Big Louie” using a simple bamboo pole. It was a moment no one could forget… and the legend was born.
From that day on, Big Louie became more than just a fish—he became a camp tradition. Big Louie represents patience, perseverance, imagination, and a little bit of camp magic. Each summer, campers hear the story, share the excitement, and become part of the legend themselves. At Creative Themes, Big Louie reminds us that the best camp memories aren’t just made—they’re passed down.
LATEST CATCH
On August 21, 2025, the last Thursday of camp, the elusive Big Louie was caught by Max W. However, we were not able to get a picture of him. The catch was witnessed by staff members as over 30 inches, which qualified Max for the Reward.
Max F., his brother Bobby, and extended campers with Big Louie. Counselor assist by Jason.
Big Louie was caught again August 30th, 2013 at 4:00 pm, to be precise. The session that week was called “Last Chance Memories”. The ever-elusive Big Louie was caught and released by RJ C., two hours before the last day of the 2013 summer season.
On August 30, 2011 after 28 years of trying and thousands of camper fishing hours, Big Louie was recorded caught and released by Rory M. Many campers thought that Big Louie was a figment of Bob’s imagination, but the proof is in the photographs. Congratulations to Rory for a great job in catching Big Louie.
For many years that followed, no camper could bring in Big Louie. A $100 reward was placed on any fish either 28 inches or over 10 lbs. Big Louie, nor his children, grandchildren, nor great-grandchildren could be caught. He broke lines, made three entire poles disappear, and he was almost caught dozens of times, but always got away from campers. One counselor-in-training (Chaz, 8/21/2003) brought Big Louie in alive . . . but he was not a camper.
